Ike After Hours returns on Aug. 26

Whether it’s leaving early for an appointment or traveling on game day, students are bound to occasionally miss school. Ike After Hours is back to provide a solution. From three to five on Tuesdays, students are able to come into the library and catch up on anything that they may need.
“Meeting with teachers on a more one-to-one basis allows students the curated and personal help they may need,” Junior, Brody Wallace, said. “It’s very helpful to me when learning something that isn’t making sense.”
As well as giving students a place to get work done, Ike After Hours gives the chance for teachers to provide students with individualised attention outside of a busy classroom. Going at one’s own pace is key for many students to be able to finish work completely.
“Since we are moving it to directly after school we hope that it encourages students to come in and do group projects and homework while it’s still fresh in their minds,” Co-coordinator, Catherine Lafever, said.
Having the ability to work on schoolwork in a calm environment where there are limited disturbances will drastically help many to carry out schoolwork all the way.
“It’ll give kids the opportunity to turn in their work on time and help them not procrastinate as much...” senior, Ava Shurtz, said.
In the past, Ike After Hours was not incredibly consistent. Weather and teacher cancellations were the most common circumstances that prevented it from happening.
“Sometimes it wasn't available if teachers weren't available," Lafever says. “We do have teachers signed up all the way through Thanksgiving break so far. But, things like the weather are obviously out of our control.”
Ike After Hours is also helping teachers as well as helping students.
“...it’s not a whole bunch, but we do get paid for it. It’s about as much as if we lead after-school clubs,” Lafever said.
Overall, Ike After Hours is a time and place for students to have a specific moment during the week for academic purposes. Taking advantage of this opportunity will help grades skyrocket and create less time spent on fretting over schoolwork.
